Generation Equality Forum Commitments by the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights

As part of the Generation Equality Forum, convened by UN Women June 30-July 2, 2021, the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights joined governments, civil society, corporations, and other actors in making commitments to undertake transformative action for gender equality. Ending gender discrimination in nationality laws is critical to the achievement of gender equality, particularly women and men’s equal citizenship and equality in the family. To help realize #GenerationEquality, the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights makes the following commitments:

Feminist Leadership and Movements

Commitment: The Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights will mobilize civil society and policy makers in three regions to end gender discrimination in nationality laws as a critical entry point for advancing feminist principles of equal citizenship and equality within the family.

Economic Justice

Commitment: Through a series of multistakeholder convenings, the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights will heighten awareness amongst policy makers and civil society in three regions of the economic harm caused by gender discrimination in nationality laws, including barriers to women’s economic empowerment, and of the role of gender-equal nationality laws in advancing economic justice.

Gender-Based Violence

Commitment: Through a series of multistakeholder convenings, the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights will heighten awareness amongst policy makers and civil society in three regions of the links between gender discrimination in nationality laws and gender-based violence, including child marriage, human trafficking, domestic violence, and the role of discriminatory nationality laws in contributing to the root cause of GBV, women’s unequal status in society.
