Mobilizing for Women’s Equal Nationality Rights: Lessons learned across regions

Today 27 countries deny women equal rights to confer nationality on their children. Over 50 countries maintain some form of gender discrimination in their nationality law. Such laws result in significant human rights violations and suffering for individuals and families. However, in the past decade alone, over a dozen States have enacted reform to advance gender equality in their nationality laws.

On Wednesday, March 16 during the 60th Commission on the Status of Women, the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights will hold an NGO parallel event to share lessons learned by activists leading reform efforts, as well as highlight the challenges to and strategies for ending gender discrimination in nationality laws. The event will also provide a space for activists to consider future collaboration to end gender discrimination in nationality laws.
